Barcodes allow products to be automatically identified at every point on the supply chain.

The GS1 system barcode family
Identification numbers can be encoded in the form of barcodes which can be electronically scanned at every point on the supply chain: on the packaging line, at goods reception docks, and at checkouts.
GS1 uses three coding systems:
- EAN/UPC - ITF-14 - GS1-128
Depending on the context, the same item can be considered as a consumer item or a logistical item. It's important to ensure that the barcode system used enables us to retrieve the item's code at every stage on its journey to the point of sale.
Barcode quality is essential if it is to remain legible all along the supply chain. Scanning problems can cause delays, errors and even litigation. Some GS1 local organisations have implemented quality control mechanisms for barcodes and logistics labels.
