GSI-128 barcodes are used for standard and non-standard logistics units packed in boxes or pallets

The GS1-128 barcode can accommodate all identificatory information contained in the GS1 system (GTIN or GLN) as well as additional data (batch number, expiry date, quantity etc.).

It is used only for logistics purposes and not for the identification of items crossing POS.

The GS1-128 standard is based on a catalogue of Application Identifiers (AI). Each AI determines the format and nature of the AI which follows it.
Example:
Application Identifier: AI 10 — Definition: Batch number — Format: n2 + anƒ20

Adoption of a standard logistics label using GS1-128 together with the DESADV electronic despatch advice message provides a response to the needs of enterprises and retailers alike, while it also meets the requirements of various regulations in terms of traceability (e.g. directive 2001/95 on general product safety, CE regulation 178/2002 etc.).
