Abbreviation for Application Identifier. The field at the beginning of an Element String that uniquely defines its format and meaning in the GS1 System.

i.e. Business to Business, intercompany exchange, that covers most of the links in a supply chain. BtoB processes are the backbone of a new relationship with suppliers, making possible to create value through more information exchanges.
CPFR
Collaborative Planning, Forecasting & Replenishement. Data exange concerning the sales forecasts,
inventory turnovers, orders, receptions and sales.
Data Modeling
Means to define the semantics (the meaning) of the data (independently from the application) that turned efficient in the elaboration of relational databases. To modelize a business function, it is necessary to analyze the data and identify the entities (person and location of an object) , their attributes (features) and the relations between these entities, and then to use a graphical syntax. There is a range of modeling methods, techniques and software.
Data Recipient (suscriber)
Stakeholder who requests or is about to receive the item sheet. He generally is the supplier client (Wholesaler, Retailer, catering companies, …).
Data Synchronisation
All the processes that lead the industrial to make right and updated data available to his partners. Synchronization of product data lead to an ideal state of data sharing that is called “data alignment”.
DataSharing
Point of Sale Data exchange (service rate, on shelf availability, ready to sell, etc.)
DataSync
Product data synchronization by electronic exchange (Extranet, product catalogue EDI, Global Dated Synchronization).
Dematerialisation
Action that aims at substituting the paper flow (item sheet, order, despatch advice, invoice,...) with an electronic information flow between the partners.
EAN International
Efficient Article Numbering Association. Former name of GS1.
data source (editor) : Stakeholder who is the generator and single owner of the information. Generally this person is the supplier (manufacturer, wholesaler, exporter,…) who owns or does not own the trademark.

Electronic Data Interchange (catalogue, orders, receptions, invoices…)
Electronic Catalogue
Service that relies on Internet technologies in order to allow a company (Data Source / Editor) to make these data available to its partners (Data Recipient / Subscriber), and these ones to integrate the data received, in order to align their reciprocal items (Master Data Alignment).
EPC
Electronic Product Code. Identification standard of the individual articles used for the RFID.
The EPCglobal, Inc organisation, created by GS1 and the Auto-ID Center, are in charge of the development and the management of this standard.
eSourcing
Management of the Requests For Information (RFI), Requests For Proposals (RFP) or Request For Quotation (RFQ) with the suppliers.
GCI
GCI is the single unifying force that brings manufacturers and retailers together on a worldwide parity basis to simplify and enhance global commerce and improve consumer value in the overall retail supply chain. It is a global user group, and its charter is to drive the implementation of GS1 standards and best practices.
GDSN
Global Data Synchronisation Network. The GS1 Global Registry and a network of interoperable, certified Data Pools that enable data synchronization per GS1 System standards.
GDTI
Global Document Type Identifier. The globally unique GS1 System identification number for documents. The Global Document Type Identifier comprises a GS1 Company Prefix, Document Type, and Check Digit.
GIAI
Global Individual Asset Identifier. The globally unique GS1 System identification number for a physical entity of any characteristics. The Global Individual Asset Identifier comprises the GS1 Company Prefix of the company assigning the asset identifier, an Individual Asset Reference, and Check Digit. The Individual Asset Reference is numeric or alphanumeric, and its structure is left to the discretion of the assigning company.
GLN
Global Location Number. The globally unique GS1 System identification number for legal entities, functional entities, and physical locations. The Global Location Number is 13 digits, which comprise a GS1 Company Prefix, Location Reference, and Check Digit.
GLOBAL REGISTRY (GS1-)
The global directory of the Global Data Synchronization Network for the registration of Items and Parties that validates registered data and ensures the uniqueness of Items and Parties based on their Global Trade Item Numbers and Global Location Numbers. Basic Item and Party information is stored in the Registry and a pointer is provided to the appropriate Data Pool where more information about a specific Item or Party can be found. The GS1 Global Registry also facilitates the subscription process between retailers and suppliers.
GPC
Global Product Classification.
A GS1 System standard for the classification of products. It is a ‘flat’ classification system based on bricks, attributes, and values. Global Product Classification is a required element of the Global Data Synchronization Network.
GRAI
Global Returnable Asset Identifier. The globally unique GS1 System identification number for a reusable package or transport equipment of a certain value, such as a beer keg, gas cylinder, pallet, or create. The Global Returnable Asset Identifier comprises a mandatory part: the Asset Identification Number (GS1 Company Prefix, Asset Type, and Check Digit) and an optional part: the Serial Number.
GS1 (Previously EAN International) : Global Standard 1
GS1, based in Brussels, Belgium, is comprised of global GS1 Member Organizations and manages the GS1 System and Global Standards Management Process.
GS1 replaced EAN-International and UCC in January 2005.
GS1-128
Structured chain of alphanumeric characters representing one or more data of fixed or variable length, each data is preceded by its Application Identifier (AI). AI, structure and length of elements are defined by GS1. The term GS1-128 also designates the barcode which contains the data. The following codes can be carried by a GS1-128 : a Serial Shipping Container Code or SSCC, a UCC/EAN-13 or a GTIN-14, a batch number, a date, a weight... Syn.: EAN/UCC-128
GS1 DataBar
A new linear barcode symbology that is part of the GS1 System and becomes an open standard on January 1st 2010. It will first be used to encode GTIN on small items and will then be used to encode additional data for variable measure items (weight, price, dates...) among others.

Global Standards Management Process.
The procedures, methods, and practices that develop and maintain GS1 System standards. GS1 manages the Global Standards Management Process.
GTIN
Global Trade Item Number. The globally unique GS1 System identification number for products and services. A Global Trade Item Number may be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits in length, represented as GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, and GTIN-14 respectively. The former designation ""Gencod"" remains in countries where French retailers operate.
This code is the one that will be transformed into a barcode and exchanged in the e-business messages. Syn.: EAN, Gencod.

GTIN-12
The 12-digit construction of the Global Trade Item Number used to identify trade items, composed of a U.P.C. Company Prefix, Item Reference, and Check Digit. Syn.: UCC-12
GTIN-13
The 13-digit construction of the Global Trade Item Number used to identify trade items, composed of a GS1 Company Prefix, Item Reference, and Check Digit. Syn.: EAN-13 - EAN/UCC-13
GTIN-14
The 14-digit construction of the Global Trade Item Number used to identify trade items, composed of an Indicator Digit (1-9), GS1 Company Prefix, Item Reference, and Check Digit. Syn.: EAN-14 - EAN/UCC-14
Item Sheet
Document or electronic message the generator of a product uses to supply his partners with all the information related to this product and the related logistics. Each item sheet has to be identified by a unique key made with the CTIN of the commercial unit, the GLN of the Editor and the code of the target Market.
This identification shall no exclude the application of the GTIN change rules described in «GS1 General Specifications» (example : brand name change).

Standard Trade Item Grouping
Group of trade units (box, pallet, box pallet), that generally are consumer units. To be described by an item sheet,
a logistics units has to be standard, i.e. gather un fix number of trade items and has to be registered in the supplier catalogue (contrary to non standard logistics units, made up following a punctual order).
Target Market
The Target Market is a geographical region based upon geographical boundaries sanctioned by the United Nations. There is one international system to describe geographical regions, the ISO 3166-code system. In the context of data synchronization, the Target Market is the geographic location where the trade item is intended to be sold.
Trade Item
Any item (product or service) upon which there is a need to retrieve pre-defined information and that may be priced, ordered, or invoiced at any point in any supply chain. A trade item is identified by a GTIN.
Variable Measure Number
A Restricted Circulation Number to identify variable measure products for scanning at point-of-sale. It is defined per GS1 Member Organization rules in the appropriate country.
VMI
